Last Updated: Tuesday, 7:39 a.m.

A man and a woman were killed this evening in a single motorcycle crash at Seminole Woods Boulevard just south of Grand Landings in Palm Coast. It is the county’s first fatal crash this Biketoberfest, and second grave crash of the day.

There have been no reported fatalities in Volusia County, where Biketoberfest, which officially ended Sunday, is centered.

Both victims in this evening’s crash were riding the same motorcycle, registered in Sweetwater, New Jersey. Both were pronounced deceased at the scene within minutes of each other, soon after the crash. The man was 58. The woman, from Atco, N.J., was 36.

The crash was reported just before 7:30 p.m. “It occurred where it goes from two lanes to one lane, just south of Grand Landings,” Palm Coast Fire Chief Kyle Berryhill said, “and it’s going to be for some time.”

A Florida Highway Patrol release issued Tuesday morning states the motorcyclists were traveling north on Seminole Woods, north of Sesame Boulevard, when they veered off the road onto the median and struck a tree. Both riders were ejected. One of them was ejected onto the southbound lanes, where a vehicle traveling south, driven by an 18-year-old Palm Coast man, struck the victim.

Seminole Woods Boulevard was closed in both directions south of Grand Landings–and was still closed around 8:45 p.m.–as the Florida Highway Patrol was conducting the traffic homicide investigation. The Palm Coast Fire Police had initially responded to the scene, along with the Palm Coast Fire Department and Flagler County Fire Rescue.

The Fire Police was clearing the scene around 7:45, Berryhill said, leaving it to the Sheriff’s Office and C.O.P.’s to regulate traffic. At the south end, the road was closed at Seminole Woods and Sesame Boulevard, enabling traffic to circumvent the crash scene through Seminole Woods neighborhoods.

Earlier in the day, a 32-year-old woman riding a motorcycle that rear-ended a car on State Road A1A in Flagler Beach suffered a serious leg injury, but survived. That crash took place at around 10:30 a.m. at South Oceanshore Boulevard and 26th Street South.

Twenty people have been killed in crashes on Flagler County’s roads so far this year. Six of them, including tonight’s victims, were riding motorcycles.

Were they wearing helmets? It’s amazing how many motorcyclists I see here in Fl., that do have helmets on.

Ridiculous you can get fined for not wearing a seat belt in a car yet motorcycle enthusiasts don’t have to wear seat belts or even wear helmets. Taxpayers still have to fit the bill when they are scraped off the road. Florida is such a dumb state, with this hypocrisy of public safety. Bikers should be taxed to compensate for these daily accidents. I don’t see why my taxes should subsidize a risk taker’s hobby.

Wondering he being out of town and didn’t see the merge sign from two lanes to one. He lost control. So sad.

This is problem for most of out of town motorists driving through Palm Coast. The roads and road contours and conditions tend to change like the speed limits in a blink of an eye; couple that with the poor or lack of lighting adds to tragedy every time.

  7. The Geode says

You don’t need a sign to know when to merge, those big arrows on the road and being funneled into another lane should be plenty of warning

Sorry if I sounded rude it just drives me crazy when I read a comment questioning something & the answer was explained already!!!

FYI, there is a helmet law in Florida. However, there is an exclusion if, 1) you’re over 21, and 2) if such person is covered by an insurance policy providing for at least $10,000 in medical benefits.

Riding a motorcycle is not a hobby – for some of us it is our daily transportation. Why should I be taxed differently? I wear a helmet every time I ride, but that is my choice. It isn’t hypocrisy either. Do you wear a fire suit in your car, or a helmet? If not, then are you truly safe? Maybe car drivers should be taxed for not looking in their mirrors, and staying off of their phones… I tell drivers every day to put down the phone before they kill a biker. If you think Florida is so dumb, perhaps you should move to the people’s republic of California.

I don’t see any mention of helmets, in the article. Can some one tell me the paragraph, and line number? You may need to check the ingredients in your pudding – it seems to be missing the “proof.”

C’mon kids. Is this what Palm Coast is? A place where visitors that die here in accidents are redicululed and demeaned? Two people are dead. Show at least a smidgeon of humility and mercy.

May they rest in peace, and sorry for the pain on their friends amd family.

  15. oldtimer says

What about smokers, drinkers and skydivers should they be taxed too? Most bikers I know have insurance so no taxpayers don’t pay when they get in an accident

Lots of deer cross there. After a heavy rain they usually move especially in the evening. I’m wondering if they tried to miss a deer crossing.

  23. DaveL says

    October 20, 2022 at 1:11 pm

I agree, helmets are optional in many states (including California) but tickets are freely given for not wearing a seatbelt when surrounded by one ton of metal.
You need to work with one head trauma victim to see the value of riding a helmet.

Did you even for just one second think that these two beautiful people have family and friends that may read your comments! What’s wrong with you – “scraped off the road” – like their deaths aren’t awful enough to those of us who loved them…they were amazing people…he was the most wonderful man, friend, brother, father, grandfather and son…she was also amazing. Your taxes mean more than their lives…well he was a dual resident of both Palm Coast and NJ for YEARS with 99% of his time in Palm Coast – so he paid taxes too…you sir are a horrible soul. Thank you for your sympathies for the loss of our loved ones…and these two were greatly loved! This was a nice read.
