The Rotary Club of Flagler Beach’s Cycle Flagler is back. The 2016 edition is scheduled for May 1, starting with 6 a.m. registration at the Flagler County Airport, one of the event’s hosts.

Hundreds of cyclists from all over the state of Florida will choose tours ranging from 16 mile to 100-mile tours. The registration fees are all the same: $45 through April 23, $50 through April 29, and $60 the morning of the event. You can register here. The entry fee is a tax deductible donation to the Rotary Club of Flagler Beach. If you include promotion code CFVIP10, you’ll save $10 on registration.

Registration will also take place at the Veteran’s Memorial Park in Flagler Beach on April 30 from 5 to 8 p.m. The evening includes a Participant Party with a pasta dinner, beer, soft drinks and dessert. Twisted Vibes will be performing. Cyclists will be able to pick up their event tee shirt and event items as well.

PC Bike will provide support and gear assistance along the tour. Safety vehicles also travel along the tour to assist cyclists and help with their equipment. Local businesses like Craig Flagler Palm Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens, Kohl’s Cares, Attorney Gail Lampert and Walgreens sponsor the rest stops along the tour routes, providing refreshments and food for the cyclists.

The first 300 participants will receive an event tee shirt as a thank you for supporting the Rotary Club. At the end of the tour lunch will be served and is included in the price of registration. Daytona Beverage and S.R. Perrott is donating the beer and Coke Cola is sponsoring the water.

On Saturday, April 30, there is a free 40-mile ride starting at the Flagler Beach Historical Museum at 8 a.m. Registration is required.

The goal of the Rotary Club of Flagler Beach is to raise funds for local scholarships and charitable organizations needing support in Flagler County. Each year the Rotary Club of Flagler Beach donates funds to Rotary International and their End Polio Now campaign. Rotary is celebrating 30 years of globally fighting Polio. In 1988 365,000 new children where paralyzed alone. In 2015 there were only a few dozen reported cases. All countries are Polio free with the exception of Pakistan and Afghanistan. Rotary will not stop until this disease is eradicated, possibly in our lifetime.

Gee, I wonder how many cyclist will be splattered on A1A this year. Amazing how the local media NEVER publishes the total number of cyclist hit during these events. Oh well, money, money, money !

Since it’s inception, during this event, one cyclist has been hit by a motorcyclist. I do not recall which year it was, but it was quite a while ago. I assisted with the accident while awaiting medical support.

What a great idea.!! Let’s clog up the already bumper to bumper traffic on our two lane roads with thousands of cyclists! And especially ones who feel life should just stops for them because they’re special. And certainly do not require this event take place on the miles and miles of unused sidewalks and paved paths that tax payer dollars have been used to build just for this purpose. How insane would that be.!!! Yes, there will be accidents and injuries because it will elevate motorists frustrations with impeding traffic that can’t maintain the speed limit on a public highway. But let’s all get our there and have a good time, right..!?!?!?
