Beutlich Pharmaceuticals, a family-owned pharmaceutical company based in Waukegan, Ill., is moving to a 20,000 square-foot warehouse in Bunnell, where it expects to hire 25 to 30 people. The company will operate locally by January 2015.
Frederic Beutlich, 68, a partner in the firm (and an inventor), has been living in Palm Coast since 2011, spurring the move away from Illinois. The warehouse was previously owned by Rick Smith, the developer who went bankrupt. The company actually incorporated two companies—Beutlich Development LLC and Beutlich Pharmaceuticals. The latter is best known for HurriCaine, a topical Benzocaine-based anesthetic gel used by dentists and introduced by the company more than 40 years ago. It was the first of its kind then and remains a sought after product in the market place.
“This is the perfect time to us to relocate,” Beutlich CEO Erlene Thomas said in a news release issued by the county administration this afternoon. “The move will be carried out in a manner that ensures our operations will not be interrupted and our loyal customers will not be affected.”
Beutlich Pharmaceuticals, according to the release, has been offering healthcare professionals unique solutions for pain management and preventative care since 1954. The company focuses on the development and commercialization of over-the-counter solutions for pain management and patient care.
“This is one of Flagler County Economic Development Opportunity Advisory Council’s target industries,” Flagler County Economic Development Chair Barbara Revels said. “Having a successful, well established company invest in our community and create 25 to 30 jobs will have a positive effect on our economy, employment and the business community.”
The new building in Bunnell will offer more opportunities for the growing product lines that Beutlich offers and has created over the years. It will also allow them to take advantage of Flagler’s strong talent pool and cost-effective environment. The company is looking to fill positions in facility management, regulatory compliance, accounts receivable, marketing, shipping and production, to name a few.
“We’re looking forward to working with Beutlich Pharmaceuticals to provide a qualified talent pool for their company,” Robin King, President of Career Source Flagler Volusia. “With Designs For Health already established, Flagler County is creating a niche for the health/sciences industry in the region.”

Hate to be a downer, but the only reason why companies like that come here is because it’s cheaper for them to operate and make money. Their not here to change Flagler Counties economics.

Exactly – Florida has for decades advertised its “low cost of doing business” to businesses to lure them here. It’s obvious what that means. And in irony that’s almost too rich for words – I read a story yesterday where someone complied a host of comments from some of our country’s biggest retailers and other businesses in their Annual Reports and other corporate filings – apparently, they are highly concerned that the low income and stagnant wage growth of their customers poses a real risk to their business!
Who would’ve thought, huh? Decades of outsourcing, slashing wages, and in general spreading the Walmart corporate model throughout the economy eventually cuts off your flow of business? Man, these guys are sharp – it’s only taken them a few decades to realize this.

As a former employee for this company many many years ago I can tell you that they are in it for the money and the bottom line. Will it be less expensive to do cost of business there ABSOLUTLY IT WILL. Will the employees who work for this company see any of the profits ABSOLUTLY NOT, not as much as they should for what they have to put up with from management. I wish whom ever works there all the best and good luck.
