Note: Logan Goodman’s obituary is here. Visitation for Logan will be held at Clymer Funeral Home & Cremations on Wednesday, January 29, 2020 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Logan Goodman, 14, a student at Indian Trails Middle School, was killed and Joey Renn, 20, is in critical condition following a single motorcycle crash this evening on Blare Castle Drive in Palm Coast’s Woodlands.
Renn was driving the motorcycle, with Goodman as his passenger, according to a Florida Highway Patrol trooper at the scene.
The crash took place at 7:30 p.m. when Renn’s motorcycle, a 2008 Suzuki GSXR 750, was going east, halfway through the stretch of Blare Castle between Blakefield Drive and Blare Drive. Blare Castle curves at that halfway point. Renn “didn’t even attempt to negotiate the curve,” the FHP trooper said, and slammed the motorcycle into a wooden electric pole after crashing through a mailbox.
A caller to 911 estimated the motorcyclist was going at 100 mph. The trooper said Renn was clearly going past the speed limit. The violence of the crash knocked the electric pole’s light fixture to the ground and knocked power out for a few customers. The impact of the crash sent the motorcycle’s battery flying far enough to strike the side of a parked SUV in the driveway, in front of 51 Blare Castle, near where the crash took place. The motorcycle was “completely destroyed,” the trooper said.
The Florida Highway Patrol was sending a team of four traffic homicide investigators from Jacksonville to conduct the investigation, which was expected to take about six hours. Authorities notified the parents of the Logan Goodman, who lives in the Woodlands, across the street from the crash scene. Goodman and Renn are not related. Renn is a Palm Coast resident, though it wasn’t yet clear from where in the city. He was transported by ground to Halifax hospital in Daytona Beach. On his Facebook page, Renn describes himself as a Flagler Palm Coast High School “Alumni and Staff.” A district spokesman said Renn is not an employee.
A Florida Power and Light utility worker restored power shortly after 8 p.m.
Flagler County Fire Rescue and the Palm Coast Fire Department, along with the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office, responded to the scene, as did the Palm Coast Fire Police, though traffic was not being regulated so much as blocked within the area of the crash scene: the sheriff’s office stretched crime-scene tape across the road, blocking off the few properties within that zone. Traffic was unimpeded on either side of the zone. The Woodlands, an older part of town, is a particularly quiet, low-traffic area, though Blare Drive, where Blare Castle dead-ends, is often used as a cut-through by traffic between Colbert Lane and Old Kings Road. Barely a sound could be heard along the road on either side of the crime scene Thursday evening but for the low voices of troopers and and other authorities, and occasional neighbors stepping out to find out what was taking place.
A helmet was found at the scene of the crash, but it wasn’t clear to which of the two riders it belonged, the FHP trooper said. The FHP’s brief crash report marks it as unknown whether either victim wore a helmet. Renn, a law enforcement officer told troopers, did not seem to have the smell of alcohol on his breath, though the investigation is in its earliest stages.
Flagler Schools Superintendent Jim Tager, who was in Tallahassee this evening with several school board members, for the winter meeting of the Florida School Board Association, relayed a message through his spokesman: “I join the school board and the entire Flagler Schools community in saying we are deeply saddened for the family and will assist in any way possible in this sad event. In a small community it is never easy to accept when someone this young passes.”
The district is mobilizing a crisis response team to be present at Indian Trails Middle School, with counselors and psychologists present for students, faculty and staff as needed.
By Friday, the foot of the utility pole had turned into a small memorial of flowers and a figurine, the severed light fixture and a couple of paramedics’ black gloves still in the grass behind it.
It is the fifth time in less than four years that a school-age child in or from Palm Coast has died in traffic-related incidents. Almost exactly a year ago, in early January, an 8-year-old Palm Coast boy was killed when his grandfather’s vehicle pinned him in a garage in Edgewater. In November 2017, a 10-year-old girl was killed when the vehicle she was riding in rolled on I-95. The driver of the vehicle, Thomas Rando, who was facing prosecution in that crash, died of a drug overdose on Saturday. Earlier that year a 16-year-old Matanzas High School girl was killed by a passing car as she was walking on a street in on Lakeview Boulevard. And weeks earlier, on the last day of 2016, a 16-year-old boy was killed in a hit-and-run as he was cycling on Old Kings Road. The driver in the hit-and-run is still at large.

Condolences go out to the families and friends of the two in this tragic accident. If you drive too fast on a motorcycle you have a good change that it will not end well.
Regardless, it is sad news and I can only hope the surviver survives and gets well.

Is with a heavy heart that I present my condolences to the family, friends and school class mates of Logan…As a community we should lobby for street traffic humps in our narrow, winding no sidewalk roads and also lower speed limits so these tragedies end and totally justified if would save one life that could well have been Logan’s this time. Our sheriff supports soft street speed humps as save lives in residential roads, by city parks, schools and school bus stops, government buildings and outside and inside shopping malls. Please lets do something as no long ago we lost another young teen in in PCP east by the entrance of Canopy Walk gates also bike speed related.
Doug says
Very sad. I’ve been around and on motorcycles practically my entire and lost my mother in the early 70’s due to a motorcycle accident. You have to respect them. My condolences to the families involved.

Melissa says
The viewing is at clymer funeral home at 530 Wednesday 1/29
Bill says
Come on palmcoaster, this a tragedy for a family. We don’t need to punish the tax payers and citizens with speed humps and signage changes……the man was going a 100mph in a residential neighborhood and he can only control his behavior, not a sign or bump and certainly not my paycheck! Just be human and pray for the family!
Amanda Lopez says
He was the funniest goofball that I knew. It’s gonna be a hard week to realize that your friend is no longer here. On behalf of all ITMS students that love and miss him, may all of our loving memories of him live on and our prayer reach the family. 😔😭🙏❤️
Charles says
After this tragedy has happened I am four speed bumps being put in all of our residential neighborhoods if it will help prevent another tragedy from happening our kids are well worth it if you are against speed bumps being put up because of the thing tax dollars think about if your kid was the one that was killed and a speed bump could help prevent it
Alyssa says
We will miss you deeply. You were the funniest, nicest and most lovable person at the school. To all of those who lost Logan as a friend or family member remember r=that he is in a better place and he will be missed. Logan stood up to his last name he was a Good man. You will be missed!
💔REST IN PEACE LOGAN💔

Man oh man where do I begin. I’ve known you for many years. You’ve always cheered the family up. Your cousin’s miss you so much. When I had to break the news to your little cousin, Ava oh, it broke her heart. All I can do is think about the good memories because that is what is pulling this household through. Friday is going to be hard. I remember how you oh so loved my system that was in the van. I remember every time I would come to Nana’s you would be the first to hug. I remember when I was at work and your nana would post pictures have you cooking on the grill. I remember you helping your nana so much even going as far as trying to cut her grass. Lord you are a Bright Young Smart individual. Us family was not ready for you to go but God has better plans for you. We love you and miss you so much. Andrea, Ava, Giovanna, and Armani
