Free For All Fridays with Host David Ayres, an hour-long public affairs radio show featuring local newsmakers, personalities, public health updates and the occasional surprise guest, starts a little after 9 a.m. after FlaglerLive Editor Pierre Tristam’s Reality Check. Today’s guests: Palm Coast City Council member Dave Sullivan, Palm Coast Community Development Director John Zobler, and Palm Coast Communications Director Brittany Kershaw. See previous podcasts here. On WNZF at 94.9 FM, 1550 AM, and live at Flagler Broadcasting’s YouTube channel.

The Friday Blue Forum, a discussion group organized by local Democrats, meets at 12:15 p.m. at the Flagler Democratic Office at 160 Cypress Point Parkway, Suite C214 (above Cue Note) at City Marketplace. Come and add your voice to local, state and national political issues.

Notably: These few lines from War and Peace suggest doom-scrolling is not a social media invention: “One step beyond that boundary line which resembles the line dividing the living from the dead lies uncertainty, suffering, and death. And what is there? Who is there?- there beyond that field, that tree, that roof lit up by the sun? No one knows, but one wants to know. You fear and yet long to cross that line, and know that sooner or later it must be crossed and you will have to find out what is there, just as you will inevitably have to learn what lies the other side of death. But you are strong, healthy, cheerful, and excited, and are surrounded by other such excitedly animated and healthy men. So thinks, or at any rate feels, anyone who comes in sight of the enemy, and that feeling gives a particular glamour and glad keenness of impression to everything that takes place at such moments.”

In a letter to a lady, Diderot quoted something Francesco [Casanova, Giacomo Casanova’s artist brother] said about the uncertainty of life, which suggests that he shared Giacomo’s wit. Francesco had stepped aside in the street to let a companion urinate against a wall, when a collapsing chimney fell from above and killed the companion. “I always recall Casanova’s comment,” Diderot wrote. “Believe that our fate is enveloped in utter darkness, and step aside for someone who wants to take a piss.”

–From Leo Damrosch’s Adventurer: The Life and Times of Giacomo Casanova (2022).
