The Indian Trails Middle School Reading Clubs have been busy the past nine weeks. The girls hosted a “Sleep-over” in the school library on October 22nd. Some 75 girls attended the event. As the girls arrived, they gathered around computers to research local scary stories. Later, the lights went out and the girls shared their stories with one another in the dark.
There was a scavenger book hunt, silent reading time, games, pizza, candy and ice cream sundaes.
The Wild Mustangs, the boys’ reading club, created an online survey to find out the reading habits and reading material preferences of the students at ITMS. With the information from the survey, they ordered magazines to match the topics guys are interested in such as basketball, football, fishing, hunting and science. They created a reading campaign titled, “15 Minutes a Day Earns You Time to Play” in order to encourage guys to read daily.
Every student who reads for fifteen minutes each day for five days will participate in a sports activity period. The sports day takes place Wednesday, December 8th.
Both reading clubs joined forces to sponsor a book drive. From December 2-6, students and faculty members are invited to donate new or gently-used books. The books will then be sold during lunches and at the book fair. All proceeds will be used to purchase new books for the ITMS library and for students at ITMS who may not have reading material in their homes.
The girls’ sleepover activities were made possible through donations by the ITMS PTO, the school’s physical education department, Sharon Irwin, and a few local businesses (Wal-Mart, Starbucks, Dunkin’ Donuts, Firehouse Subs, Publix, Regal Nails).
