Florida Opposes Federal Rule to Limit Power Plants’ Greenhouse Emissions

Florida and two dozen other states Thursday filed a legal challenge to a new U.S. Environmental Protection rule aimed at reducing carbon emissions from power plants.

The states filed a petition at the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia that alleged the EPA overstepped its legal authority. “Petitioners will show that the final rule exceeds the agency’s statutory authority and otherwise is arbitrary, capricious, an abuse of discretion, and not in accordance with law,” the petition said.

“Petitioners thus ask that this court declare unlawful and vacate respondents’ final action.” The rule was published Thursday in the Federal Register. Information posted on the EPA website said “the final limits and emission guidelines are based on proven pollution control technologies that can be applied directly to power plants and can achieve substantial reductions in carbon pollution at reasonable cost.”

Other states filing the challenge were West Virginia, Indiana, Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Georgia, Idaho, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia and Wyoming.

Asking tough questions is increasingly met with hostility. The political climate—nationally and right here in Flagler County—is at war with fearless reporting. Officials and powerbrokers often prefer echo chambers to accountability. They want news that flatters, not news that informs. They want stenographers. We give them journalism. You know by now, after 16 years, that FlaglerLive won’t be intimidated. We dig. We don't sanitize to pander or please. We report reality, no matter who it upsets. Even you. But standing up to this kind of pressure requires resources. We need a community that values courage over comfort. Stand with us, and help us hold the line. Fund the journalism they don't want you to read. No paywall. But it's not free. Take a moment, become a champion of enlightening journalism. Any amount helps. Right. Republicans kill in numerous ways…wars, women, LGBTQs, immigrants, Blacks, and now it’s everyone that needs to breathe. Cruelty, dysfunction, lies, propaganda and constant lawsuits are the embodiment of today’s Republican Party. Actually, it’s quite painful to watch the demise of this political party. While many of us never agreed with lots of their policies (especially trickle down economics) we were able to respect their deliberateness and their belief that laws were meant to help Americans. Not anymore.

Is anyone surprised by this? After all, “climate change” is just a hoax, right? It must be true, FOX said so on TV just last night, and trump/de santis agreed.

Why would anyone oppose reduction of green house gases?
Cost of electricity to its patrons. Is anyone willing to pay multiple times their current bill to comply?
A common sense approach balancing reductions with cost effective technologies instead of mandating changes that could cripple our economies.

Only people who put money above breathing and health would oppose the reduction of green house gases. Money or no, here’s where we’re headed. https://www.washingtonpost.com/weather/2024/05/10/carbon-dioxide-record-mauna-loa/
We can pay now or later when it becomes a matter of life or death.

Maybe you can cite some examples of energy companies moving to reduce green house gases without being prodded by the government to do so. I know the oil and gas industry certainly has been a beacon of willfully moving to find ways to improve without any government oversite.
How do you think fuel mileage on vehicles has improved over the years? Do you think Ford, GM and Toyota worked to improve that out of the kindness of their hearts?
There will always be a balance to be maintained between finding ways to improve vs. the cost of doing so. Fortunately it seems to me that, overall, companies do find paths to improved efficiency that are relatively cost effective.

All these Republicans need to sit in their garage with the garage door closed and their car engines running for a few minutes, then get back to us to report the results of how they felt afterwards.

Thank you Bill C. I’m laughing, but I really shouldn’t be.

Situations like this have me wondering what our lives would be like now if Gore was President, all those years ago . . .

    This FASCIST INSANITY TODAY:
As Florida copes with rising seas and record temperatures, lawmakers are going to exceptional lengths to delete many mentions of climate change from state laws in a new bill that Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis signed into law on Wednesday, according to his official X account.

The wide-ranging law makes several changes to the state’s energy policy – in some cases deleting entire sections of state law that talk about the importance of cutting planet-warming pollution. The bill would also give preferential treatment to natural gas and ban offshore wind energy, even though there are no wind farms planned off Florida’s coast.

The bill deletes the phrase ‘climate’ eight times – often in reference to reducing the impacts of global climate change through its energy policy or directing state agencies to buy ‘climate friendly’ products when they are cost-effective and available. The bill also gets rid of a requirement that state-purchased vehicles should be fuel efficient.
