Crime Reports May 10-16

 The following incident and arrest information was compiled using official documents, reports and affidavits obtained from government and law enforcement agencies. This feature is not inclusive. It is a sampling of reported incidents in the Flagler County area. Note: The U.S. legal system provides the presumption of innocence to those charged with a crime until guilt is proven in a court of law.

Residential Mugging

A Palm Coast man out for a walk in the “L” section of Palm Coast was mugged shortly after midnight May 16, a report said. A man jumped from the shadows and punched him in the face, knocking him to the ground, the pedestrian told deputies. The assailant took the walker’s wallet before fleeing in a dark colored Lincoln Towncar with two other men. The mugger got only a drivers license and $15, the report said.

Quick Recovery

Deputies recovered a stolen vehicle May 13 before its owner even knew it was missing. Deputies found a green Chrystler Sebring at 7 a.m. crashed into the woodline near Ripple Place and Ripplewood Lane in Palm Coast. The owner hadn’t yet noticed it was missing from the front of home where he was staying, the report said.

Stabbing Over Stuff

A domestic disturbance between a 20-year-old Bunnell man and his mother’s boyfriend and ex-husband landed the young man in jail on charges of attempted murder and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, according to a charging affidavit. Kevin Harris and his mother’s boyfriend, Rickey Glover, got into an argument outside of their Anderson Street home just after 8:30 a.m. May 13. Glover told police he was tired of Harris stealing his belongings. Harris, Glover and Elona Wallace gave somewhat conflicting accounts to police of what happened next, the charging affidavit indicated. But ultimately, the fight escalated inside the home, where Harris said Glover punched him repeatedly in the face and police said he stabbed Glover five times with a five-inch knife, according to the charging affidavit.  Glover was taken to the hospital and Harris to the Inmate Facility to be held without bond.

Jewelry Hock

Palm Coast resident Mary K. Parks was arrested May 13 on charges of grand theft and dealing in stolen property after deputies recovered more than $13,000 in stolen jewelry froma Bunnell pawn shop. The jewelry was taken from family members and a home where the woman worked as a housekeeper, the charging affidavits said.

 Man tased at McCharacters

The security guard at McCharacters tried to stop Charles M. Barbel from beating and strangling his wife May 13, a charging affidavit said. But Barbel became more irate and began assaulting the guard, witnesses said. Several additional guards and bystanders came to the rescue and pinned Barbel to the ground until deputies arrived, the report said. But Barbel escaped the deputy’s grasp while being handcuffed and charged at the security guard a second time. The deputy had to use a taser gun to subdue Barbel, the report said. Barbel was charged with domestic battery by strangulation, resisting arrest with violence and battery and is being held without bond.

Intoxicated Teen Arrested and Peppered

An 18-year-old Palm Coast girl was arrested May 12 after she attacked a deputy responding to a disturbance at her parents’ home on Pritchard Drive, an incident report said.  The teen’s parents said the girl, who is on juvenile probation, hasn’t lived with them in months but showed up that night intoxicated and refused to leave. When a deputy arrived, the girl attempted to flee but was caught. Before, during and after she was secured in handcuffs, the teen repeatedly made herself fall limp,  kicked, “kneed,” spat at and screamed profanities at the deputy. Despite the deputy’s warning, the girl did not cooperate until pepper spray was administered, the report indicated. Breath tests at the jail indicated the teen’s blood alcohol level was  0.287,  more than three times the limit allowed for adult motorists that have been drinking. She was charged with battery of a law enforcement officer, disorderly conduct and misdemeanor violation of probation.

Caught in the Act

When a resident on Fieldstone Lane in Palm Coast was awakened by a sound next to his bed at 3 a.m. May 12, he found a man wearing an orange hooded sweatshirt and sunglasses standing there. The resident waking startled the intruder and he immediately darted out the back door of the home, the report said. Deputies were unable to locate the intruder and believe he entered the home through an unlocked door.

Auto Theft Bungled

The steering column was ripped apart and the wires and ignition components damaged in an apparent unsuccessful attempt to steal a 2007 Chevy Avalache parked outside a home on Perotti Place in Palm Coast May 12. The vehicle also appeared to have been rummaged through but only small change was taken, the report said. And the rear hatch and lock on the vehicle was damaged.

Country Store Vandalized

A thin white male wearing jeans and a dark colored shirt and using another shirt to hide his face smashed the front door at The Country Store on County Road 305 May 11, according to a Sheriff’s Office incident report. Surveillance footage shows the man walking around the building, carrying a lug wrench at just before 3 a.m. The man disappeared around the north side of the building and returned with an orange milk crate. The purpose of the man’s new tool never becomes clear in the video footage.  After hitting the door with the wrench and kicking it a few times, the man fled on foot, leaving the glass door smashed without ever entering the building. Deputies found the milk crate approximately 25 feet away on Mahogany Boulevard, the report said. 

Wanted Man Found in Jail

A North Carolina man wanted since December of last year was charged shortly after midnight May 11, a charging affidavit said. Jeffrey B. Gore, 26, was wanted on a Flagler County warrant to face charges of cocaine trafficking. The affidavit said deputies found Gore at the Flagler County Inmate Facility. He’s being held without bond.

Car burglaries

Vehicles were reported vandalized or burglarized at the following locations:

•  Riviere Lane, Palm Coast, May 11. A portable DVD player valued at $200 was taken from an unlocked vehicle.
• Bunker Lane, Palm Coast, May 11.  A Florida vehicle tag was taken from a white Cadillac.
• Filbert Lane, Palm Coast, May 15. Foul words were scratched into the side of a car parked in a driveway in addition to key scratches all over the vehicle.
• Lindsay Drive, Palm Coast, May 15. Three would-be burglars were caught rummaging through a vehicle outside a home by it’s owner. The men fled the area, taking nothing with them.
• Elder Street, Bunnell, May 14. The front door of a vacant mobile home was pried open and a washer and dryer taken from the home.
• Pritchard Drive, Palm Coast, May 13. A Chevy Impala was burglarized. Loose change and vehicle registration documents were taken.
•  Riverdale Lane, Palm Coast, May 13. A stereo was ripped from the dash of a Ford Explorer.

Home burglaries

Homes were reported vandalized or burglarized at the following locations:

•  Black Alder Drive, Palm Coast, May 10.  A pool patio screen was cut and a  mounted flat screen television was taken. The report taken Monday indicates the theft occurred sometime between May 6 and 10.
• Flintstone Court, Palm Coast, May 15. The front door of a home was kicked open between noon and 5 p.m. and the home was ransacked and burglarized.
• Ramblewood Drive, Palm Coast, May 9-16. A bedroom window was broken and a home was rummaged through. Nothing of value was in the home when the incident occurred.
• Filbert Lane, Palm Coast, May 15. Two firearms and $1,000 was taken from a safe using a spare key found inside the home.
• Fanshawe Lane, Palm Coast, May 15. A 50-inch television was stolen.
• Rybark Lane, Palm Coast, May 14.  An envelope containing $7,000 was taken.
• Ethel Lane, Palm coast May 13. The front door of a home was kicked in but the resident said nothing appeared to be missing.

DUI Arrests

 In 2008, an estimated 11,773 people were killed in automobile crashes involving a drunk driver (someone with a blood alcohol content level of .08 or more), according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.  Soon, a varying list of traffic and law enforcement agencies will begin releasing the DUI data they compiled in 2009. Whether drunk driving’s annual death toll rose or fell last year, the number isn’t likely to be the only acceptable one…zero.  These reportedly impaired drivers were also found driving on Flagler’s streets this week and were arrested.
