Palm Coast Man Accused of Stabbing, Strangling and Throwing His Daughter

October 13, 2015 | FlaglerLive | 2 Comments

charles edwin scott, domestic violence
Charles E. Scott.

In mid-July, Charles Scott, 64, a resident of Roxton Lane in Palm Coast, was arrested for domestic violence. The charges were soon dropped. It’s not unusual in cases of domestic violence: victims choose not to pursue the case have a change of heart or hope for better circumstances.

Early this morning, Scott was arrested again and charged, this time, for domestic battery by strangulation, domestic violence and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon for allegedly stabbing his daughter several times with the sharp end of a hairbrush. His daughter sustained minor injuries and did not initially report the alleged attack last week, but did so when the latest attack—an alleged strangulation—took place this morning.

The latest incident developed shortly after midnight when Scott was arguing with his 45-year-old daughter over the fact that he’d had to pick up her son from school the previous day, according to Scott’s arrest report. The argument escalated as it went from room to room, and “multiple times during their argument,” the arrest report states, Scott pushed his daughter with enough force to throw her to the ground.

Domestic Violence Resources

Anyone can be a victim of domestic violence regardless of age, gender or race. These questions can help determine if you or someone you know may be a victim. Does he or she:
  • Isolate you from family and friends?
  • Say things to insult you?
  • Criticize your parenting skills?
  • Take your money?
    Act as the primary decision-maker?
  • Prevent you from developing your career?
  • Physically harm you or threaten you with weapons?
  • Threaten to commit suicide?
Act like the way he/she treats you is your fault or you are over-exaggerating?
  • Threaten to hurt your pets?
If you or someone you know is experiencing any of these signs, call the Domestic Violence Hotline immediately at 1-800-500-1119. In Flagler County, call the Family Life Center 24 hour Hotline at (386) 437-3505. Or call 911.

Then when he and his daughter were in her bedroom, she alleges, “he began strangling her with both hands across her throat,” and with such force that she felt she was about to pass out and fell to the ground. She then told her young son to call 911.

A 46-year-old woman who witnessed the incident corroborated the alleged attack. During the investigation, the victim showed a deputy four lacerations—on her upper chest area, the left elbow and her left side. The lacerations were the result of another argument, the victim said, that took place on Oct. 3 or 4, when Scott allegedly stabbed her with the pointed end of a hairbrush. The victim said she did not report the incident because she has an active case open with the Department of Children and Families and did not want another incident of domestic violence at her residence marring her case at DCF.

The victim reported a third alleged incident: on Oct. 10, she called 911 and while on the line with dispatch, Scott snatched her cell phone and snapped it in half.

The arrest report notes that Scott was arrested for domestic violence on Aug. 10, but that the charges were later dropped. The Flagler County jail log lists only one previous arrest, on July 16, for domestic violence. The Department of Children and Families was contacted regarding the latest incident and Scott booked at the Flagler County jail. His bond is listed as $32,500. He remains at the jail Tuesday evening.

Remove any children from this home IMMEDIATELY…and think twice before placing them with any other relative before thoroughly investigating them also!

I am compelled to share with our community that victims of domestic violence do not “choose not to pursue the case”. The State Attorney is presented with the case and makes the decision whether to proceed with criminal charges or not. Perpetrators coercive control patterns, criminal activity and legal accountability should be the topic of discussion…not the victim of a crime.

The Family Life Center provides educational presentations within our community – free of charge – to anyone interested in learning more about domestic violence. Please call (386) 437-7747 to schedule.

Our 24 hr hotline is available to anyone who is a victim of domestic violence or sexual assault –
