Jay Pringle, a 57-year-old resident of Bunnell, is in critical condition and was not expected to survive, and his 17-year-old son Jaymes was in serious condition following a head-on crash on State Road 40 Saturday afternoon (Sept. 19) that also resulted in the death of a 75-year-old Daytona Beach man and injuries to two other passengers.
The crash took place in the area of Pine Woods Drive and the Plantation Pines subdivision in Volusia County, between Barberville and Ormond Beach.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Jay Pringle was at the wheel of an SUV traveling west when, taking a curve, the SUV went into the eastbound lane, crashing into an oncoming pick-up truck. The driver of the pick-up died at the scene. Jay and Jaymes Pringle were taken to Halifax hospital in Daytona Beach. They had been returning from a baseball game. (Jaymes is a member of Flagler Palm Coast High School’s baseball team, but that game was not associated with a school event, a district spokesman said.)
The crash is under investigation, FHP notes.
Leah Burnsed, a close family friend, wrote on Facebook earlier today that “Jaymes has two fractured femurs, a fractured collar bone, two fractures in his jaw, and some cuts on hands and hips. Jaymes has already gotten surgery on his legs and will go back into surgery sometime today or tomorrow for his jaw and collar bone, he will make a full recovery. His father Jay came into the hospital with severe head injuries and trauma, after surgery and the doctor doing all they could he is unfortunately no longer with us. Family from all over arrived in town last night and is here to say their goodbyes to Jay and to support Jaymes through this long road of recovery. He’s going to need all the love over the next few months.”
“The Pringles will have many hospital, rehab, and physical therapy bills that will need to be covered,” Burnsed, who lost her brother to a vehicle crash eight years ago, continued. A GoFundMe page had raised upwards of $18,000 by early this afternoon.

But what about the other people in the vehicle they hit. Those people have names they have families. They are fathers grandfathers great grandfathers brothers uncles and dear friends. One passed Mario Colecchia at the scene the other two Allen Hurst and Dave are still hospitalized in serious condition. Please pray for all. Show some compassion for all families. This is devastating.

What is the identity of the poor innocent man killed traveling in the opposite direction on the pick up truck hit by this SUV driven out of control that crossed in wrong way of the highway? I am sorry for both lives lost and hope trhe 17 y/o recovers well and God gives strength to their families.

Some of us at Germfree had only me Jay and his infectious laugh while others had worked with him previously. My last conversation with him was his telling me how happy he was to be at his new job. We were happy to have gotten to meet and know him. It was hard today as the somber news traveled. I pray for the Pringle family and the families of the other vehicle and ask for comfort to the ones left behind.

It was a terrible, rainy day and people were flying down 40 as they always do. I am sorry for everyone involved but I think the speed limit should be enforced a bit better than it has been. Drive safely, especially in the rain.

Speed limit has nothing to do with a head on collision, if a car veers into an oncoming lane a speed limit won’t save them. It was late and weather conditions were less than ideal. Prayers out the people in both vehicles.

This is a terrible thing that happened and I do pray for the 17 year old and his family. Concerned however that the death of “Mario” and very injured Allen and Dave seemed to be pushed to the side and they were left unnamed by Flagler Live. Such a tragedy for those families. I am the 17 year old from this accident I am now 18. But we were on our way home from My first baseball Tournament of the fall season from Viera. My dad is a very impatient driver and always has been i’ll admit it.why he passed going into a bend while it was raining? I’ll never know. But the other half of the story wasn’t told. The people in the other vehicle were doing about 90-95mph going into the bend as well. It is also said that the people in the other vehicle may have been drinking because a bar tender commented on another site that my story was posted on saying how they would go to a local bar in Astro County to have a few drinks and get food…

Jaymes – Thank you for posting this. I didn’t know the rest of the story. I’m so glad you pulled thru. Your father’s loss hurt me deeply. Probably more than losing my parents. I am welling up just writing this on the anniversary of this tragic event. Your father and I were stationed and lived together in Alaska and we flew together often. We were close and saw each other many times over the years until our families came along and our children became the most important aspects of our lives. Your dad stayed with us the night before my twins were born when he was in the NY/NJ area. We constantly chatted and shared memes…of course. God Bless You and your family.
