A car veered off the road and into a pond at the intersection of I-95 and State Road 100 just before 5 p.m. today. No one was hurt.
The car was occupied only by a driver, who managed to crawl out to dry ground quickly after the crash, which left the vehicle, a Chrysler, half-submerged and tilting forward.
The crash took place at 4:54 as the driver, whose identity has not been released, was taking the on-ramp off State Road 100 to go south on I-95. The cause of the crash is not known.
The Sheriff’s Office, Flagler County Fire Rescue, the Palm Coast Fire Department and the Palm Coast Fire Police all responded, but there was no road blockage, and the scene was expected to clear relatively quickly. Saxon’s Towing of Bunnell was dispatched to fish the vehicle out of the water.
Saxon’s was involved in fishing a vehicle out of the pond at almost the same location, off the southbound off-ramp, nearly three years ago, though in that case the car was almost fully submerged and deputies and paramedics had to dive in to rescue a man from drowning in his car. The man recovered fully.

Steve the fine print said it was just before 5 PM, weather may have been a factor or an aggressive driver could have cut him off , not every accident can be caused on the driver being on the phone, just my opinion. His family must be glad he safe at home tonight and not injured !

It appears the driver was able to break the window and get out safely. Whatever tool he used to get out, I need this in my car. Thank God no one died or was injured.

This is what happens when you get the cheap silver organic brake pads from Advance Auto or even Autozone. Should have gotten the Gold ceramic pads. Get what you pay for!

I drive past all four of these catch ponds multiple times each day and I am completely baffled as to HOW someone would end up in one of these ponds unless there was a mechanical failure of his car or another vehicle involved that forced him off the road. There’s more to this story that we will never read.

I was the driver of the car. I can assure you I was not on the phone, however I do agree a lot of people use their phones while driving. I have a squeaky clean driving record. I work full time and go to school. I was on my way to class. Unfortunately, the road is always wet there even when it’s not raining. There’s always water running across and there should be a guard rail as that pond is very close to the road. I’m not the first person who has crashed into the pond. I was able to roll my window down and crawl out of it. Although I was told today you can use the ends of your seat head rest to bust a window out.

Guess we all need to contact FDOT for more guard rail protection around water hazards. I already asked the city and they said FDOT is in charge of that. We have many areas left unprotected near ponds and some canals. They do have some guard rails, but stop short of full protection……..they leave openings and cars go in. Example near firehouse and canal bridge on Belle Terre/Royal Palms near Publix. The man had a heart attack and the car veered off road and kept rolling right through where guard rail stopped/opening to road…..into the canal. Policeman jogging tried to save. If the guard rail blended right into road area…he would not have landed in canal water. Another died I-95 ramp to Palm Coast Parkway couple of years back & there’s the one of family run off road with mother/rescued. It bothers me the possibility of ending up in the water, especially with me being very careful near these open water spots, but having no control of someone that may run me off the road into the water. I’m getting older and not moving as quickly to rescue myself out of this type situation. I have my LIFE HAMMER ready with no clutter around it in the console, so it can’t go flying around.

“Chloe’s law” is named after a UCF student that died last summer when she crashed into a retention pond and drowned in Orlando. After Chloe Arenas’ death, a couple of Florida Senators started digging into the problem of people crashing into ponds and drowning and what they found shocked them: Nearly 500 people have died in similar crashes over the past 10 years in Florida.
We need to get them to come to Flagler county to install some more protection for us PLEASE!
