The circumstances leading up to the midnight incident at 17 Felshire Lane are not exactly clear yet, except that alcohol was involved. The incident ended with two men in the hospital with stab wounds, and one of the men facing felony charges.
The two men involved are Jonathan Cerdeira, 18, and a 19 year old whose name has not been released. They had been drinking and arguing. At one point one of the men stabbed the other in the back, and at least from what he told authorities, stabbed himself in the neck, and ended up in the 250 square-foot swimming pool on the property. (The night-shift commander’s report posted by the sheriff’s office states, “the suspect was stabbed and jumped into the swimming pool.”
The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office released an incident report in early afternoon. The report lists Cerdeira as the alleged victim. It states that 911 dispatchers got a call at 12:21 from a main who claimed he’d been stabbed–and that the knife was still in his back. Cerdeira had escaped and hidden in a bathroom, from where he told the 911 dispatcher that he could hear the alleged assailant in the house but didn;t know where exactly. Then he heard the sound of someone jumping in the pool.
Deputies arrived at the scene, and someone opened the door from within. One of the deputies reported the scene as follows: “The male I observed was not wearing a shirt. A male then opened the front door at which time we gave verbal commands to show his hands which he did immediately. The male stepped outside the front door and was covered in blood on his entire chest area, neck, side of his face, and hands. The male also
appeared to be soaking wet. After the male complied with our commands to show his hands, he was ordered to lie down on the ground, face down as. At that time the male dropped to his knees and fell face down on the concrete walkway. At that time it was unknown if the blood on this male was his own or from the other subject.” The man had a stabbing wound in the middle of his throat. It was “oozing blood,” the report states. He also had a long laceration on his right hand.
“The male uttered several times that he wanted to kill himself,” the report states.
Parts of the report are censored, as the investigation is ongoing. Deputies heard Cerdeira’s voice calling out from inside.
Both men were taken to Halifax Hospital in Daytona Beach for treatment. Both survived, but the man with the allegedly self-inflicted wound had to undergo surgery. One of the men was described as white, the other as Hispanic. The relationship between the two men is not known for now.
The 2,000 square-foot house has been under the same ownership for 14 years–Jose and Janice Cerdeira–and is homesteaded.
Around noon, a pool maintenance man arrived at the house and parked in front–the house was still encircled by the sheriff’s office’s yellow crime-scene tape–and briefly spoke with the sheriff’s deputy posted there, then left.
The alleged assailant faces a charge of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.
