The Flagler Beach City Commission this evening picked 12 candidates to invite for interviews. The 12 were whittled down from a list of 35 during a commission meeting tonight. That short-list was itself down from the 140 applicants who applied originally. Each commissioner had reviewed the applications and drawn up a list of 10 names. See the chart below marking the 12 candidates who’ll be invited.
Commissioners have not picked interview dates. They’ll do that later this month, subsequent to background checks of the candidates. One of the candidates on the interview list, Jim Coleman, has been offered the city manager’s job in Avon Park and is in negotiations there. Should Coleman not take the job, another candidate on the Flagler Beach short-list of 12, Gregory Wood, is Avon Park’s second choice.

The top 10 candidates each commissioner and the mayor picked individually appear in the charts below. The two charts provide the same information, arranged two different ways to make it easy to see patterns or look at each list on its own merits.
Mayor Alice Baker participates in the process (and drew up her own list) but she does not vote when it comes time to picking the short-list for those candidates who will be interviewed. Nor will she vote when it comes time to picking a manager. While her voice matters, as it carries some political weight, her picks were eliminated when it came time to choose the final 12.
Bernie Murphy, the outgoing city manager, logs his last day on Sept. 30. Commissioners hope to have the position filled by then, but have already spoken of the possibility, in Commission Chairman John Feind’s words, of an “interim-interim city manager.”

This is quite a list of hopefuls. It should have included where these applicants call home. How many on the list live in Flagler Beach and are concerned residents regarding how our taxes are paid out?. This is very important.

Avon Park Council chooses new city manager

AVON PARK – Lady Lake resident James Coleman, whom the Avon Park City Council picked last night
as its new city manager, is “extremely interested” in the position.
The Council picked Coleman, on a 4-1 vote, with councilwoman Brenda Gray dissenting.
Coleman was initially ranked No. 1 by a 3-2 majority of the council, but City Attorney Gerald Buhr said
other municipalities generally hold a vote to allow for a unanimous acclaim.
Former Mayor Tom Macklin suggested the council postpone its vote to allow residents a chance to
interact with the finalists and have committee members visit the communities they had served.
Councilman Al Joe Hinson said he didn’t have any problem with the candidates.
“If we miss, we miss; we fire him,” he said.
Gray staunchly supported Gregory Wood, a former county administrator for Holmes County, whom she
ranked first along with Councilman Paul Miller.

Explain this if you can!
One applicant for the Flagler Beach City Manager position is Bruce Cambell, a resident of Flagler Beach, a property owner/taxpayer, and someone we can expect will not leave at the first opportunity . Highly educated with Masters Degrees in Economics and Businness administration . He has managed major corporations both foreign and domestic. He is obviously more than qualified and should be placed at the top of anyones short list.
But here comes the strange the part of the story. Two Flagler Beach Commissioners, while picking their top 10 applicants didn’t even have Campbell on their top 10 list at all. Apparently they have some other political feelings that have nothing to do with a man’s qualification. This is a diservice to the citizens of Flagler Beach.

Mr. Campbell and Mr. Evans are by Far the two most Desirable Candidates for our new City Mgr. Would like too see it narrowed down to these two and allow each to speak on their ideas and hopes for the Future of our City. Good Luck to Both !!
