The Flagler County branch of The American Association of University Women (AAUW) Saturday awarded upward of $11,000 in scholarships to 10 local students at various levels of their education–from middle school to doctoral work.
The association held its award ceremony at the Pine Lakes Golf Club in Palm Coast, with some 80 to 100 people in attendance for the lunch event.
Three scholarships of $2,000 each were awarded to continuing college and graduate students, two scholarships of $1,000 each went to graduating high school seniors. And for the first time, the association awarded $500 arts grants to two students, enabling recipients to use the money for lessons in their respective fields (music, art, performance arts) or camp. The arts grant was spearheaded by Elinor Bozzone.
Scholarship were also awarded to a college student to attend the National Conference for College Women Student Leaders (NCCWSL) at the University of Maryland, and two STEM summer camp scholarships were awarded to 7th grade girls to attend Tech Trek Camp at Palm Beach State College. STEM is the acronym for science, technology, engineering and math.
The group also installed its new officers, with Kimble Medley taking over as president.
Founded in 1881, AAUW now has some 170,000 members across the country, and 40 branches in Florida. The Flagler branch was founded in 1984. The organization empowers women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research. Learn more or join at www.flaglercounty-fl.aauw.net.
