A pop icon falling for one of the NFLās preeminent superstars may seem like a slice of Americana ā a scene from a small-town high school magnified by a factor of 10 million.
But this is America in 2024 so, of course, nothing magical stays that way.
To be clear, public opinion data suggests that most Americans think Taylor Swift is good for the NFL. But with her beau Travis Kelceās Kansas City Chiefs heading to a fourth Super Bowl in five years, and with Swift herself reportedly preparing for a journey across the globe to cheer him on in the big game, the right-wing talk machine has gone into overdrive.
Fox News host Jesse Watters suggested that Swift may be a Pentagon asset used to combat online misinformation. Former GOP presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy tweeted that he thinks Swift and Kelce are being artificially propped up by the media pending an upcoming Swift endorsement of Joe Biden. OAN referred to the couple as a āMassive Super Bowl Psy-op,ā a brainwashing campaign designed to indoctrinate citizens to an elite agenda and away from religion.
The idea that the Swift-Kelce romance is some sort of deep-state plot is perhaps gaining some traction in far-right circles because it lines up with other right-wing conspiracy theories and the rightās broader agenda.
Swiftās NFL fandom
Swift has endorsed Democrats in the past, including Joe Biden in 2020. Kelce, while not politically outspoken, was featured in a Pfizer ad touting the COVID-19 vaccine.
Republicans are more likely than Democrats to believe, without evidence, that a secret group of rulers is controlling the world, as well as that vaccines cause autism. While there isnāt public opinion data yet on the theories from Fox News and the right-wing echo chamber that the Swift-Kelce romance is an elaborate left-wing scheme, it contains elements of similar conspiracies for which partisan splits exist.
And opinions on Swift herself are similarly polarized. The singer is viewed favorably among virtually all groups in America, although Republicans are the only group in which as many members dislike Swift as like her.
Taylor Swift has brought a unique element to NFL fandom. I havenāt seen fans of my hometown Buffalo Bills make signs denigrating a pop star since they thought Jon Bon Jovi wanted to buy the team and move it to Toronto in 2014.
Yet, as a political scientist, I know itās an open question whether any of this matters politically.
Oprah, Obama and celebrity endorsements
In the background of these conspiracy theories is the possibility that Taylor Swift could endorse Joe Biden. The Trump campaign is reportedly thinking about such a possibility, with allies talking behind the scenes about a āholy warā against Swift, brainstorming ways of painting her as a left-wing celebrity advancing an elite Democratic agenda.
But how much would such an endorsement matter?
In political science literature, a hallmark case of the power of celebrity endorsements is Oprah Winfreyās 2008 backing of Barack Obama. Winfreyās endorsement occurred during a primary in which he was taking on a more well-known opponent, Hillary Clinton.
Winfreyās endorsement, wrote the authors of a prominent study of the case, led participants in the study āto see Obama as more likely to win the nomination and to say that they would be more likely to vote for him.ā In other words, it helped advance public perceptions of Obamaās viability as a candidate.
A Swift endorsement of Biden would be different.
Swifties are largely suburban and young. Almost half are millennials, and over 10% belong to Gen Z. They represent a slice of the youth vote that candidates have attempted to court for decades, and the suburbs are increasingly a battleground in the countryās urban-rural divide. A Swift Instagram post in 2023 helped lead to 35,000 new voter registrations ā and her ability to generate funds could also be invaluable to Biden.
But an Oprah-like effect is less likely for a Swift endorsement of Biden, who is running as an incumbent without a serious primary challenger and his status as the Democratic nominee is certain.
Further, polling demonstrates that the effect of a Swift endorsement could be essentially a net wash, with 18% of the public saying theyād be more likely to support a Swift-backed candidate and 17% saying they would be less likely to support Swiftās favored choice.
Even those numbers might be affected by partisan-motivated reasoning, where a personās party identification colors their perceptions of information. Swiftās prior backing of Democrats and perceived liberalism might cause her supporters and detractors to use polling questions asking about a potential Swift endorsement to express support or disfavor of her, regardless of how her endorsement would actually influence their choice.
Not just a love story
Essentially, a Swift endorsement might matter at the margins, but there are many, many other factors at play in a general election. Thatās especially true in an election between two men who have both served as commander in chief, a rarity in American politics.
A Swift endorsement, then, is perhaps less important in and of itself than Donald Trumpās response to a Swift endorsement of Biden.
Public opinion polling in the wake of Trumpās Access Hollywood remarks in 2016 showed that majorities of both women and men believed Trump had little or no respect for women. But Trump actually improved his numbers among women voters in 2020.
A Swift endorsement of Biden could bring out some of Trumpās worst impulses. Perhaps the effect of his response on how voters view him could be more important than her endorsement of Biden.

Information has always been essential to democracy. Itās a societal good, like clean water. But many now find it difficult to put their trust in the media and experts who have spent years researching a topic. Instead, they listen to those who have the loudest voices. Those uninformed views are amplified by social media networks that reward those who spark outrage instead of insight or thoughtful discussion. What are the MAGA-maniacs going to do when Taylor Swift and Oprah Winfrey collaborate on a Get out the Vote Voter Registration campaign and hold a joint press conference to endorse Joe Biden. They will lead their hundreds of millions of followers on Facebook, TikTok, Instagram. Joe may be old but he has not been convicted of sexual assault [actually the sitting judge called it rape]; Joe didn’t have to pay a stripper hush money, Joe did not defraud Banks, Insurance Companies and, more importantly, the American people.
Isabella Milanes says
Taylor is very liberal, she tends to side with many anti American organizations. Not that she agrees with them all the time but she is vocal not to lose some black / brown support
Pierre Tristam says
Can you name a single āAnti Americanā organization Taylor supports? Or are you equating being anti-MAGA, the simplest form of patriotism and civic responsibility, with anti-Americanism?
Ray W. says
Hello Mr. Tristam.
The thought occurs to me: What if Taylor Swift is smarter than Isabella Milanes? What if Taylor Swift has more experience and a better understanding of the human condition in America? What if Taylor Swift is a better judge of character?
I am consistently gratified by the wisdom, character and justness reflected in the lives of my own children. They aren’t perfect, but there is no reason to believe that Taylor Swift hasn’t formed from her own life experiences a complete worldview based on justice and care for her fellow citizens.

Generally speaking, I don’t buy the self-serving assumption so favored by older folks that older is wiser. Atherosclerosis is not just a physical reality, but mostly a mental one. One needs only look at how older folks are voting these days–one needs only look at such cultural and social catastrophes of self-indulgence as The Villages and its cousin, Palm Coast–to see what the hatrdening of mental arteries does to a society.
Ray W. says
Hello Mr. Tristam,
Yes, as a senior citizen, I know how to synchronize constant velocity carburetors using basic wrenches and a length of fuel hose serving as a stethoscope. I just don’t know how that qualifies me as wiser than my children, who don’t yet know how to do that. Everyone knows something I don’t know and if I need to know what they know, I should accept that they just might be, probably might be, smarter than me about a particular subject matter, regardless of their age.
I do know that Democrats have never been communists; that Democrats have not ruined America; that Democrats have strengths and weaknesses and succeed and fail and learn. If Taylor Swift has gained sufficient wisdom, achieved a certain level of education, and employs the necessary intellectual rigor to engage in the process of common sense, then it might be wise to listen to her conclusions.
Pierre Tristam says
Ray, if I didnāt give Ms Swift her due, my daughter would disown me. Considering her wisdom, and my increasing senescence, I defer to her (and you, but thatās old news: I used to watch you in court just to remember that Ciceros are not always gathering dust on our shelves: we do miss you in court, and thankfully look forward to your arguments here.)
Laurel says
Pierre: As to “…the self-serving assumption so favored by older folks that older is wiser” I recall a poster on the wall in the Engineering Department I worked in, of an old Indian dressed in beautiful feathers and beads. It stated something to the effect of the respect for their tribal seniors’ wisdom. Many tribes and communities have depended on and revered their senior members for the very reason of wisdom. White powdered wigs were worn by our forefathers to demonstrate knowledge. Turns out, George Washington did not wear a wig, but powdered his red hair white.
You are convincing me that when we have a past issue, we pin it on someone, or a group. In your case, it appears to me that people of different colors, religions, and genders don’t seem to serve that particular focus, but seniors do. You are teaching your kids, and soon grand-kids, how to think of you and your wife as you age. As you are well aware, kids are very heavily influenced by their parents. I truly do hope they are wiser, or it could be a very disappointing future.
Just consider it.

She has a right to do so just as many bow to the altar of Trump! Butttttt, she is not crazy like the MAGA followers.
Michael Cocchiola says
I will be less likely to vote for Trump no matter what Taylor Swift does.
Deborah Coffey says
Man, I thought the Republican Party was lost when Newt Gingrich ran the House. This is a 1,000X worse. They’ll destroy anyone and anything to get their own way in pure Trumpian style. I can’t help thinking that with Greg Abbot defying the Supreme Court and DeSantis assisting him, that our beautiful country is headed for big, big trouble.

MAGA is terrified of everything… even wholesome pop stars…
Judith Michaud says
I think it is hysterical that the MAGAS are afraid of a super star, but they have every reason to! She has donated millions to help others less fortunate and she has gotten so many to get out and register to vote ! I really believe that the MAGAS are desperate for tRump to win so he can pick his clone Ronnie to run as VP and should he win, the MAGAS will impeach him and Ronnie will be president ! What a nightmare!

I am a Dem0crat and I dislike Swift in the same way I dislike Harry and Megan…. I am tired of seeing them in the headlines… I really just want to watch football…. That is all. I don’t want hear about kneeling, standing, who is screwing who or anything that is political. Just football…. Please stop…. It’s not the GOP making her political, it is my own party… Please stop.
