The pursuit of two people in a stolen vehicle that begun in Daytona Beach this morning ended around 7 a.m. on I-95 in Flagler, just north of the Old Dixie Highway interchange, as the vehicle swerved off the interstate and plunged into a wooded ditch.
One of the occupants was taken to Halifax hospital in critical condition. The other was arrested.
The incident began when Daytona police officers saw a “suspicious vehicle” back into a parking space. Two individuals were asleep in the car, according to a Daytona police news release. A check of the license tag revealed that the vehicle had been stolen in West Columbia, South Carolina, and that its owner was the victim of a homicide.
Realizing that cops were nearby, the driver of the vehicle pulled out and a pursuit was on, ending up on I-95 at speeds in excess of 100 mph, in foggy and still dark conditions.
A delivery truck for Bloom-Masters may have played a role in what led to the car swerving off the highway: the delivery truck was parked at the scene of the wreck, along with about four units of the Daytona Beach Police Department and two units of the Florida Highway Patrol early this morning, at mile marker 278 on I-95. Traffic was not impeded.
The Florida Highway Patrol is conducting the crash investigation. The suspect is in custody at the Daytona Beach Police Department. The scene was cleared at 10 a.m.
