On May 20, Florida Hospital Flagler presented a $5,000 donation to the Flagler County Education Foundation for Flagler County School’s “Classroom to Careers” Flagship programs. Florida Hospital Flagler on May 20 presented a $5,000 donation to the Flagler County Education Foundation to support Flagler County Public School’s “Classroom to Careers” Flagship programs, an initiative started two years ago to expose students to various careers in the context of their school work.

“Florida Hospital Flagler’s gift is an inspiration to other businesses and community leaders who understand the strong connection between an educated workforce and the health of a community,” said Deborah Williams, executive director of the Flagler Education Foundation. “Preparing students for healthcare careers is among the top priorities for our community.”

The “Classroom to Careers” initiative is a district-wide effort that encourages students to explore and ultimately succeed through community partnerships and project-based learning. One focus area of the program is health science, which Florida Hospital Flagler has helped develop during the past two years, particularly at Rymfire Elementary school, where the hospital helped open the Flagship Medical Lab by donating medical equipment to facilitate hands-on learning for the students.

“A portion of the $5,000 donation will be used to continue supporting the Rymfire Medical Lab,” said Williams. The remainder will be used to continue expanding the programs and preparing students for careers.

“We are so proud to support the Flagler County Education Foundation,” said Robert Davis, Florida Hospital Flagler chief nursing officer. “These funds will help our children learn and grow, and perhaps one day they will become our future doctors and nurses, caring for us right here at home.”

I’ve never seen so many private, organizational & corporate donations being sifted into the coffers of Florida’s well documented failed education system. I thought I read somewhere that the Florida Lottery contributes almost 2 billion dollars in currency & almost 4 billion in bonds annually to the state education system, so what’s with the donations? We all know donations are tax write offs but shouldn’t all this Lottery money be able to not only sustain this dismal failure but all students statewide should have to best of the best of any & everything available to them without resorting to esteem killing donations, handouts & students hitting up motorist at major intersections for sports uniforms & money for bus transportation to games? No? Okay, maybe I missed something here, however I’ll play catch up right after I return from the local high schools car wash jamboree to raise cash for new musical instruments to replace the ones that have been rotting in their school for the last 3 decades.

WOW, five large for what pray tell? Once was a day when students pretty much had their primary career goal set by midterm of their junior year in High School. Pretty much anything before that was forced on them & anything after that was a 11th hour last ditch effort compromise. That’s why we had REAL guidance counselors who didn’t babysit incorrigible students who obviously had ADHD issues but worked closely with students who just needed to be pointed in the right directions to achieve their own goals without distraction.

Like the failed & tragic VA Hospital Administration the American education system should be completely dismantled & rebuilt from the ground up.
