Palm Coast residents are familiar with the exit to Palm Coast Parkway from the northbound lanes of I-95: the road curves a few degrees to the right, away from a retention pond rimmed by trees to the left of the road.
Kenneth E. Yarborough, 53, of Palm Coast, was driving a 2005 Nissan Altima when he took the ramp just after 2:30 this morning. According to a Florida Highway Patrol report, the Altima, apparently failing to completely negotiate the slight curve, traveled off the road onto the grassy area to the left, which inclines down toward the retention pond.
The car struck several trees around the pond, the report states, then into pond, coming to rest facing northwest. The Altima was heavily damaged on the driver’s side. Yarborough was pronounced dead at the scene by Flagler County Fire Rescue paramedics, who were among the responders at the scene. The Palm Coast Fire Department and the Palm Coast Fire Police also responded.
He was traveling with one passenger, Omayra Rodriguez Jarrett, 31, also of Palm Coast. Jarrett was seriously injured and taken by ambulance to Halifax hospital in Daytona Beach. Both Yarborough and Jarrett were wearing their seat belt.

Fire Police are volunteers who come out to major scenes to assist, typically with traffic. They are an invaluable asset.
