Broomstick Attack on Basketball Court Leads to Child Abuse Charges and Jail for 30-Year-Old

Monday evening (July 15), several teenagers were playing basketball at the Espanola Community Center on County Road 205 west of Palm Coast when, according to witnesses cited in a police report, 30-year-old Anndra Macklin allegedly attacked one of the youths, and later got into a fight with another, a broomstick in one hand and a beer in the other.

According to one of the youths cited in the report, Macklin appeared at the community center, brandishing the broomstick, telling all the youths to go home and engaging one of them in a “verbal dispute.” The boy said another youth made a funny comment, which enraged Macklin. She allegedly pushed one of the boys down. The boy, allegedly in fear for his safety, then wrestled Macklin to the ground to stop her from attacking him.

Macklin got up and started chasing him with the sharp end of the broomstick, according to the report. Three youths and an adult—Justin Mickens, 18—witnessed the incident and provided statements to police that described the event in similar terms. Every witness noted the beer Macklin held in one hand as she chased the youth.

The police report redacts the names of youths, so it isn’t clear what relations any of them are to Macklin. But one of the youths returned home to 164 Knox Jones Avenue, where Macklin lives (though her jail log lists 309 Elm Avenue in Bunnell as her address). At the Knox Jones Avenue house, the youth reported, Macklin continued to be angry and “shoved his face with an open hand, which caused his head to go backward,” the report states.

During the incident at the community center, one of the youths there had called his mother to report that Macklin had allegedly attacked him. The mother then went to the Knox Jones Avenue to meet her son and discuss the matter with Macklin. While there, the mother witnessed Macklin getting into an altercation with a 17-year-old boy, physically and verbally

Macklin was arrested on two counts of child abuse.

She was also charged with possession of prescription pills without a prescription, though Macklin said she often mixes and keeps her prescriptions—as many people do—in the same pill bottle, and didn’t readily have all her prescriptions at hand. The broken broomstick was recovered at the Knox Jones Avenue address.

Tuesday afternoon Macklin remained at the county jail on the charges, and $3,500 bond. She also faces a failure to appear charge.
