Homeschooling requires having a highly engaged, stay at home parent with a high level of education to be successful. If these kids had that, they likely wouldn’t be at the alternative school to begin with.

I fully agree that violent children should be kept away from students, who really want to learn. I attended elementary, middle and high school in Europe, and kids, who disturbed others would be immediately expelled from regular schools, and sent to those ”special” schools. As a result, I’ve never, in my entire life, seen a fight at school, nor any misbehaving students. I’ve never seen a police officer in my schools either, as there was never any need for one. If one doesn’t want to learn, it’s his or her own decision. Students should be held responsible for their actions, and if they turn down the privilege of education, we should keep them away from those kids, who do want to make the school time productive.

It sounds to me like this man deserves nothing less than life in prison. He knew what he was doing, he shot someone in their back, and it’s obvious he had no regard for human life. It’s scary that people like this own a gun. This man let his emotions take over and made a very poor decision. It’s really a shame.

it is more than appropriate for the Sheriff to comment on this issue. His office will be in charge of the poorly educated children, when they become criminals, if we continue to disembowel the public education system.

We are working hard to make plans for 2013-14 and it starts right here in Flagler with the Girls Get IT Surf ‘n Science Camp! Of course, we have other summer academies in South Florida. The SUPERB summer academy focuses on character and leadership while the Jobs for Florida’s Graduates summer academy focuses on the college application process. You can learn more at http://www.flgraduates.org. On behalf of the 3000+ students we will serve this upcoming year, thank you for your concern about our budget but the veto didn’t impact us fiscally. Those funds were to help us expand to the School Districts currently on our waiting list.

Not a Manfre fan but the sherriff is entitled to his own opinion. I do not have school age children but I am willing to pay the additional tax to keep the alternative school open. When problem students are integrated back into the mainstream they have more suspension times and possibly expulsion which keeps them in the streets to create more trouble. Keep them in school to give them more chance for life in the future.

Negative Jim, if this tax hike is successful, it will US who are providing the deputies, not you. We are the ones footing the bill.
