Live Commentary: South Korea 2, Greece 0

| June 12, 2010

Cradle of depression. But not on the football pitch.

If Greece played economics as well as it plays football, Europe, and the world, wouldn’t be teetering on the brink of a double-dip recession compliments of the people Ronald Reagan lovingly called “Grecians.”

Greece improbably won the quadrennial European Championship in 2004. That’s ancient history by now. But these men can surprise. They’re ranked 13th in the world, 10th in Europe in FIFA’s meaningless rankings.

South Korea? They can be exciting to watch, though it’s difficult to pin down their style. As I recall from the previous World Cup, they’re a snapper of a team, darting at foot-level to compensate for heights they don’t possess. Their star is Park Ji-Sung, who plays with Manchester United.

This is Group B, where Greece and South Korea are up against Argentina and Nigeria. For all of Argentina’s football fame, and despite having Lionel Messi, the best player in the world today, Argentina is only as good as its coach, Diego Maradona, will allow it to be. Maradona is nuts. He’s dysfunctional. He’s undisciplined. That has leaked to his team. So Group B is wide open. Any of these four teams can advance.

Greece and Korea are taking the pitch.

    Go Korea!!!!!!!
Pierre, what did you think of the opener SA vs Mex? I thought it was brilliant.

The Brits here think they are going all the way….

Great match that opener, once they got past the first 20 minutes, but France-Uruguay? Shame, shame. And duller than Alain Robbe-Grillet. I’m rooting for Korea too. I have to. It’s part of my Hyundai credit agreement.

Hola my old friend. It’s an anniversary of sorts for us n’est-ce pas?

The French are scaring me that they are going to repeat their Korea performance. The Korea Greece match was full of action and the Argentine Nigeria ist starting frantically. Love it. But let’s face it we are all waiting for US England. Do I have to renounce my citizenship if I root for England? Shakespeare and Chaucer visited me in a dream along with Henry V and told me it was England’s destiny.

What if the Dutch win the WC in South Africa?

I have to admit though that the noise in the stadium is making these games almost unwatchable. I have to turn the sound off for long periods.

What? No comments on Green’s og? No “BP gave him his gloves”? No “This is a spill we appreciate”?
