Palm Coast’s Scott Jones, 51, Drowns in Intracoastal During Fishing Trip

Scott Jones, a 51-year-old resident of Wildwood Drive in Palm Coast, went on a fishing trip with friends Thursday afternoon on the Intracoastal Waterway near 94 Old Oak Drive South in Palm Coast, across the river from the Hammock.
Around 4 p.m., Jones decided to go swimming. He swam toward the middle of the Intracoastal, which can appear deceptively calm, “and then appeared to get caught in the current,” according to a police report. “Jones then showed signs of distress.”
Jones had gone fishing with friends–Bruce Jonas, 61, and Earl Hughes, 51. When Jonas saw Jones in trouble, he jumped in to help. He was able to get to Jones and get him to shore. But Jones was not breathing, and he was not responsive.
Flagler County Fire Rescue administered CPR and transported Jones to Florida Hospital Flagler. He was pronounced dead in the emergency room.
The investigative deputy reported that the information about the incident at the Intracoastal was received from Jones’s son Scott. The deputy attempted to make contact with both Hughes and Jonas, but “both men were not home at the time and thus unable to give written statements of the incident,” the deputy reported.
“This is a tragic event and our thoughts are with Mr. Jones’ family,” Flagler County Sheriff Jim Manfre said in a release.
