Think Fast: “Explaining Stroke,” a Free Seminar at Florida Hospital Flagler May 16

| May 4, 2012

Someone in the United States has a stroke every 40- seconds, and every four minutes, someone dies of a stroke–a leading cause of death and disability in the United States.

On Wednesday, May 16, Florida Hospital Flagler is offering a free seminar, “Explaining Stroke,” featuring Board-Certified Neurologist Dr. Jose Garcia. The free seminar begins at 1 p.m. at the hospital, at 60 Memorial Medical Parkway, in Classrooms A, B and C, which are located near the main entrance to the hospital, on the first floor. The receptionist will guide you.

The seminar is designed to empower people to think and act fast when a loved one or they themselves are faced with the symptoms of a stroke.

Hospital services such as Rehabilitation and other local organizations will provide education, demonstrations and options for rehabilitation should a stroke affect you or a loved one.

Although stroke risk increases with age, strokes can—and do—occur at any age. Nearly one quarter of strokes occur in people under the age of 65, the Centers for Disease Control reports. Every year, about 795,000 people in the United States have a stroke, according to the CDC. About 610,000 of these are first or new strokes. About 185,000 people who survive a stroke go on to have another.

Compared to whites, African Americans are at nearly twice the risk of having a first stroke. Hispanic Americans’ risk falls between the two. Moreover, African Americans and Hispanics are more likely to die following a stroke than are whites.

Ask me about adding the FAST video to your hospital’s CCTV or to local cable TV. ted.clark@state.ma.us
