Severe Thunderstorm Warning For
Flagler and St. Johns Until 5:15 p.m.

| August 13, 2011

From the Weather Channel.

Last Updated: 4:58 p.m.

The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Southeastern St. Johns County and northern Flagler County until 5:15 p.m. That includes Palm Coast.

At 4:24 p.m., the National Weather Service was tracking a line of severe thunderstorms capable of producing quarter-size hail and severe winds in excess of 60 miles per hour. Storms were extending in an act from north of St. Augustine south, around Palatka, and west across Flagler County, moving east at 6 miles per hour.

From the Weather Service: “For your protection, move to an interior room on the lowest floor of your home or business. This storm has the potential to cause serious injury or damage to property.”

Keep in mind this lightning myth from the Weather Channel–that lightning always strikes the tallest object. False: Lightning strikes the best conductor on the ground, not necessarily the tallest object. In some cases, the best conductor might be a human being.

  1. Ken Dodge says:

Uncle worked on the commuter railroad and was never struck by lightning; seems he was a poor conductor.
